Have you ever lost so much money you throw up?
....it happened to me yesterday.
DogFarm is involved in a real estate workout on some land. He just saw $1.7million dollars dissapear. After the meeting with the attornies he went outside and as he was getting into his car and he threw up next to it. Then he threw up again. Funny, it's just "equity" it's just "digits" I never even got to spend it (and I can still pay my bills and won't lose the primary residence and I will live to fight this battle in round 2), but for the record, it still hurts like I have never been hurt before (I'm only 34). The worst part is that the people who owe me the money were at the table and they just don't want to pay up. DF fulfilled his part of the deal, but not them. I could have ****ing killed them and if we had been in a field instead of an arbitration room... Instead he went home and cried. The good news is that DogFarm's chick knows he was struggling and she's hanging in there as is the dog. And any MSM newscaster who thinks the housing market is getting better needs to get his head checked. Needless to say, my appreciation of gold is strengthened as we go into this recession. excuse me, just thinking about it makes me want to cry and barf. i just need to be alone. I'm going to sign off now and eat some soup. |
Re: Have you ever lost so much money you throw up?
Never had enough to do that, although I do get queasy signing any kind of loan. Good luck on round #2

Re: Have you ever lost so much money you throw up?
Maybe Dogfarm got into some chocolate? :bear_tongue:
Joking aside, that sounds pretty painful. It's kind of like the woulda/shouldas people muse about that they didn't act on, only yours was a real experience. Glad you've got someone to comfort you and some gold to keep you centered! |
Re: Have you ever lost so much money you throw up?
Dogfarm, I was there last 12/14. I woke up to a call from my attorney saying that the US Mint had shut us down. Caught me with my pants around my ankles. I had 100 tons of "product" (copper pennies) that had been delivered to a smelter... and on which I never received payment. That was $300,000 face value - melt value was @ $560,000. I eventually got paid face value, but then my "partner" melted the 100T (illegally) and pocketed the entire $260k profit.
Yeah... I've wanted to barf. |
Re: Have you ever lost so much money you throw up?
I remember when you shared your story, SLV. Made me feel a little sick just thinking about it. :no_ma:

This would have been easier to handle by myself. However, seeing my wife carry the burden, and knowing I have several kids to take care of has made it more difficult. Life goes on. I'm young, and there will be more opportunities. I'll take my lessons with me and build on them. |
Re: Have you ever lost so much money you throw up?
Sorry Dog. Strike when least expected.

Re: Have you ever lost so much money you throw up?
Money makes people do bad things. You have to be an exceptionally good judge of people when you do business with them. I've lost maybe $10-20K because people swindled me - not enough to make me hurl big mucus-coated chunks or cough up brick-sized blood clots; but enough to innoculate away any trust or naivete left in my systen. When money is involved, mamboni goes into hard-nosed scrutiny, "why me, why do you come me," paranoid "I won't get fooled again" mode. And that goes double for family members (mooching bastards)!:bear_w00t:
You are young and have many years ahead - do not let your business dealings ruin your health. Nothing kills the mood at a contract negotiation like someone wearing a drool-cup under his chin, gulping down antacid liquid, suffering from bad hand tremors and little clumps of dried vomit in his beard. |
Re: Have you ever lost so much money you throw up?
DogFarm needs to shoot some guns........it always make me fell better.
Sorry to hear about it ~ but you're young & healthy and will fair better on the next deal........plenty more chances ahead to recover losses. psssst.....buy GOLD if you're able. :bear_tongue: |
Re: Have you ever lost so much money you throw up?
That's ****ed up.
What happened?! |
Re: Have you ever lost so much money you throw up?
That's what you get for refering to yourself in the third person.....
Just kidding! Crap story. Sorry that it's happening to you. Hard to tell from internet posts, but you strike me as a pretty good dude. As far as this comment goes.... Quote:
My current debt consists of mortgage, car and about $700 Amex bill. Off topic....hang in there DogFarm! Things get better, they may get worse first, but eventually they always get better.... |
Re: Have you ever lost so much money you throw up?
Wow.....Dog......and SLV.....
I really couldn't say in a public forum what I do if somebody came anywhere CLOSE to beating me out of that kind of money.......but it would involve bloodshed. Hard to believe DEADbeats don't understand that....... |

I've never had enough to lose that big. Poor Dog Farm. I know we all feel for you.
Argent Dragon's right. Go shoot some guns...loud ones with a lot of recoil. It always cheers me up. |
Re: Have you ever lost so much money you throw up?

Re: Have you ever lost so much money you throw up?
DogFarm:
You need to immediately hire an attorney who knows how to work with a private investigator, you need to find out immediately where these people have hard and liquid assets, partnerships, and maybe safe deposit boxes, and file for the court to freeze them. I am taking your word for it that you've fullfilled your end of the contract, it's your right and responsibility to claim what they owe you, even if it's going to cost you, even if you'll probably throw up more going through the legal proceedings, and even if you'll probably get back only a fraction of what you stand to lose. Remember, dead beats like these are the reason that the US will be plunged into hyperinflation, and it's irresponsible losers like these that's giving more of your liberty to the government everyday by not oweing up to their obligations. Best of luck friend and please keep us posted. Someone else here ought to be able to give you better suggestions from time to time, and your experience will help us all. |
Re: Have you ever lost so much money you throw up?
That's a big loss, that must really piss you off. I see red if somebody tries to screw me on 170 let alone that.
I see and learn, from my mistakes and from other people's too. Dont get ****ed again. Learn from mistakes. You're alive, walk away and move on to the next thing as fast as you can. At your age, dont be afraid to take risks, just try to manage the risk wisely, and not bite off more than you can really chew. |
Re: Have you ever lost so much money you throw up?
I had an unreal weekend at the Casino a long long time ago. Started with $50 and just kept winning. I couldn't lose, got an awesome room for the weekend, met some nice ladies and had two unbelievable nights. Sunday arvo I was dead set broke. Had to call a mate to come pick me up as I couldn't even afford the bus fare out of there. I don't know how much money I won and lost but it certainly wasn't in you're league DogFarm (maybe $20k?) but I'm just a blue collar worker who at the time was on the minimun wage. Was I sore at losing so much money? Hell no. The way I see it is that I lost $50 but lived like the king for a brief time. Man I got wood just remembering those ladies :bull-buddy-icon:

Re: Have you ever lost so much money you throw up?
Shattered dreams are not fun, and I don't mean to be insensitive, but what could you have done that was worth 1.7 million? Have you ever made that kind of money before?
If you were trying to middle man a deal and it falls through, the only thing you lost was the hope it would happen. If you put up 1.7 million and somebody ripped you off...that is a completely different deal. I've had potential gains slip through my fingers, and I've experienced the feeling. I've had money stolen from me, now that is a sickening experience. If you put up capital and were taken, that's war, and I would be after them with guns blazing (figuratively speaking). File a lawsuit if you have ground to stand on. |
Re: Have you ever lost so much money you throw up?
Always referring to yourself in the third person is known as disassociation, and can be a sign of an impending meltdown. Do you know a good therapist (or maybe a few sessions of EST would be better)?

Re: Have you ever lost so much money you throw up?
I've lost money over the years in various transactions, usually linked to credit and cars. :)
There are a couple of clunkers that stand out, I felt devastated at the time, but the amounts were small, only in the region of $5000 or so, so it was a cheap lesson. I learnt a lot about true valuation of things, and walked away with a financial education. :) Unfortunately, there is a balance between being 'tight' with your cash and living your life with some enjoyment, sometimes you have to spend up a little to have a good time; budget it, spend it, and you won't feel guilty. Act on impulse and you will regret it forever. If you are young, you can always make more money, you can never however, buy your health, family and friends back. |
Re: Have you ever lost so much money you throw up?
So the developers went BK on you and didn't pay you for work you did huh? I would take Andy's advice.

Re: Have you ever lost so much money you throw up?
I was reading an article about a week ago on inflation & ethics/morals.
I had started researching it, because someone had posted some articles on life during the Weimar Hyperinflation (miserable) seemed like as the honesty of the govt currency went down, so did the general honesty of those in society. I realize this does not help you, but I expect these kind of situations to increase in the coming years "forewarned is forearmed" |

Re: Have you ever lost so much money you throw up?
:bear_w00t: That's very bad DF...my sympathy.
Got beat out of a down payment( earnest money )on a property by a real estate agent who was in collusion with various sellers. They required 10% earnest money up front to even issue a contract to buy...then a week later call and say the seller backed out and they split the earnest money with the seller. You get nothing back...the contract was worded in so much legalese it would have taken a team of lawyers a week to decipher it. I found out the same property had been sold 4 times using this scam and it wasn't the only property this real estate agency had listed as sucker bait. I got ripped for about 8 grand and wrote it off as a business loss. My lawyer said it was perfectly legal the way their agreement to buy and sell was worded...no judge would even consider a complaint. A second lawyer's opinion turned out the same verdict. They are still in business pulling the same scams as they were twenty years ago...complaints to the state BBB and state Realtors board went absolutely nowhere. There are some real estate scammers you really can't judge from their national affiliation...this was Century 21. Complaints to them went unanswered...I gave it up. :rolleyes_m::rolleyes_m::rolleyes_m: |
